Fishing Advice
-
Boilies are the most widely used and reliable carp bait in the UK, available in a huge range of flavours and sizes to suit every season and venue. Fishmeal-based boilies tend to excel in colder months when carp have a higher protein requirement, while sweeter fruit and nut-based baits often come into their own through spring and summer. Alongside boilies, sweetcorn, pellets, and hemp are all highly effective carp baits - particularly when used as loose feed around your main hook bait. We stock a wide range of boilies, wafters, pop-ups, and bulk baits at Voyager's Hook, suitable for everything from runs waters to specimen venues.
-
If you're new to fishing, you don't need a huge amount of kit to get started. For basic coarse fishing, you'll need a rod and reel combo (a 10–12ft match or feeder rod paired with a fixed spool reel is ideal for beginners), a selection of hooks, some floats or feeders, a landing net, an unhooking mat and some basic bait such as maggots or sweetcorn. A rod licence from the Environment Agency is also required for anyone aged 13 or over fishing in England. At Voyager's Hook we're always happy to advise beginners on exactly what they need for their local venue - just get in touch and we'll point you in the right direction without overselling you on kit you don't need yet.
-
Coarse fishing is a broad term covering the fishing of freshwater fish species other than trout and salmon - it includes species like roach, bream, tench, perch, barbel, and carp. Carp fishing is a specialist branch of coarse fishing focused specifically on catching carp, often using specialist rigs, boilies, and bite alarms for longer sessions. Carp fishing tends to involve more static, session-based fishing, while general coarse fishing often uses float or feeder tactics with more active bait presentation. Both disciplines are hugely popular in the UK, and Voyager's Hook stocks tackle and bait for both.
-
LRF stands for Light Rock Fishing - a style of ultralight lure fishing targeting smaller species from rocky coastlines, harbour walls, piers, and estuaries. Using very light rods (typically 1–15g casting weight), small jig heads, and soft plastic lures, LRF anglers target species including blennies, gobies, wrasse, pollock, bass, and scorpion fish. It's one of the fastest-growing forms of fishing in the UK, requires minimal kit, and is a fantastic way to catch fish from almost any accessible stretch of coastline. all of the tackle and tactics are also used in ultralight fishing for freshwater species like perch, pike and chub, some anglers even use it to go after carp! It is becoming hugely popular and is one of the most exciting ways to test your skills as an angler. We stock a dedicated range of LRF rods, reels, jig heads, and soft plastics at Voyager's Hook.

Carp can be caught year-round in the UK, but the most productive periods are typically late spring through to early autumn, when water temperatures are higher and carp are actively feeding and moving. May and June are often particularly good as carp begin to come out of their winter lethargy and feed aggressively ahead of spawning. Summer nights can produce excellent results, especially on warmer, humid evenings. Winter carp fishing is entirely possible - carp don't hibernate - but feeding windows tend to be shorter and tactics need to adjust, with single high-attract hook baits over a small amount of feed often outperforming heavy baiting campaigns.
-
For most carp fishing situations in the UK, a 10 - 12ft rod with a 2.75lb or 3lb test curve is a solid all-round choice. The test curve dictates the rod's power and the weight of lead it casts most effectively - a 3lb TC rod suits leads of around 3–4oz, which covers most standard carp fishing scenarios. For shorter-range fishing on smaller lakes, a 2.75lb TC rod with a softer action can be more enjoyable to use. For long-range fishing on large gravel pits, a 3.5lb TC rod gives the extra power needed. If you're unsure which rod suits your fishing, our team at Voyager's Hook are happy to advise - we fish ourselves and won't just sell you the most expensive option.
-
Pike will hit a wide range of lures, but soft plastic shad-style lures in natural baitfish colours are among the most consistent all-round performers in UK waters. Rigged on a jig head of 14–21g depending on depth, a 4–6 inch shad worked with a slow, rolling retrieve accounts for a huge number of UK pike. Jointed hard lures and large spinnerbaits are also effective, particularly in coloured water. In winter, slowing everything down is key - cold water reduces pike activity, so a slower retrieve and longer pauses between movements will often out fish a faster summer approach. We stock a full range of pike and predator lures, wire traces, and unhooking tools at Voyager's Hook.
-
Yes. Anyone aged 13 or over fishing in England and Wales requires a valid rod licence from the Environment Agency. Licences can be purchased online at gov.uk/get-a-fishing-licence and are available as 1-day, 8-day, or full 12-month licences. A trout and coarse fish licence covers the vast majority of freshwater fishing. Under-13s fish for free. In addition to a rod licence, many fisheries also require a separate day ticket or club membership - always check with the venue before fishing.
-
Feeder fishing is one of the most popular and effective methods of coarse fishing in the UK. It involves attaching a small cage or open-end feeder to the line, filling it with groundbait or loose feed, and casting it to a chosen spot. As the feeder lands, it releases a concentrated patch of bait around your hook bait, drawing fish into the area and encouraging them to feed confidently. Feeder fishing works on rivers, canals, and stillwaters and is effective for a wide range of species including bream, tench, barbel, roach, and carp. It's a very learnable method for beginners and incredibly versatile for experienced anglers.
